This two week language course is intended for lawyers who need to improve their English for their work. Participants are likely to be in a legal practice which involves the use of English to deal with individual or corporate clients, or fellow lawyers, across different legal jurisdictions. It is assumed that participants will have been practising law for at least two years.
An upper intermediate level of English is required. Participants should be able to read English (newspapers, textbooks, journals) relatively easily and be able to understand spoken English with few problems.
Course Content and Aims
The course aims to give participants the opportunity to extend and activate their legal vocabulary in English; to increase fluency and confidence in using English in professional contexts; and to enable participants to prioritize their own language learning needs with a view to continued English language development after the course. A variety of topics are covered by the course including aspects of: UK and Continental legal systems; case law; company law; contract law and property acquisition.
Course activities will include: - Role plays of meetings and negotiations - Giving short presentations on legal topics - Reading and discussion of legal text, including case reports - Vocabulary building exercises There will be guest speakers both from the Law Faculty of the University and from the legal profession.
The course focuses on activating reading and speaking skills through cooperative task-based work in pairs or small groups. There are opportunities for more individual work, for example
